Student Assistance Program at Temple
Hey everyone,
As Dianne sent out yesterday, we are looking for individuals to get involved in the Study Assistant Program. For this particular opportunity, we’re looking for MS4s to sign up to tutor MS2s over blocks 4-11 for Academic Medicine credit! During one 4th year block of your choosing, you will be in charge of offering review sessions for the MS2 students — there will be informal weekly reviews for large groups of students and individualized sessions with the MS2 that you are personally paired with. For more information on this opportunity you can see the attached document. For those who wish to sign up, please follow this link: https://goo.gl/forms/0wq4qr4Abl5R9Guh1. If you have any additional questions, please email us at [email protected].
Thank you!

MS2 Updates
Hello Everyone!
I hope everyone enjoyed our first weekend back and didn't stress too much about the RAT tomorrow (good luck!). I have a couple of quick announcements specific to our class.
1. Recently two new committees were created to help ensure student input into how the school is run. We need 2 MS2s (1 per committee) who want to spend 2hrs/month helping to ensure the school continues to improve. If you are interested, please email me ([email protected]) by this Thursday (1/14/16) and let me know which committee you are interest in joining. It really is a great opportunity that will only require 2hrs/month.
Student Academic Standards and Promotions Committee
The Student Academic Standards and Promotions Committee is a standing committee of the School, with faculty in part appointed by the Dean and in part elected by the Medical Faculty Senate, and with students nominated by the Student Government Association then appointed by the Senior Associate Dean for Education. The Committee makes recommendations to the Senior Associate Dean for Education about student promotions and disciplinary actions, based on academic (course grades) and non-academic (professionalism) issues. If the Committee must meet at a time when it is impossible to convene a quorum, the Dean may appoint alternate members on an ad hoc basis.
Student Learning Environment and Appeals Committee
The Student Learning Environment and Appeals Committee is a standing committee of the School, with faculty in part appointed by the Dean and in part elected by the Medical Faculty Senate, and with students nominated by Student Government Association then appointed by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. The Committee works to improve the learning environment by addressing student concerns about mistreatment; it also hears student appeals of grades and promotional and disciplinary decisions. The committee makes recommendations to the Dean, whose rulings are final. If the Committee must meet at a time when it is impossible to convene a quorum, the Dean may appoint alternate members on an ad hoc basis.
2. On Tuesday, DIT will be coming back to campus to give us another pitch for their product. Please sign up on their google doc so we get as much food as possible! They will also be bringing coffee and donuts in the morning, Qdoba for lunch, and donating $5 to Philabundance for every person that attends the talk. So please read the information below and come to this lunch time talk in 105 to get free food and (essentially) donate $5 to a great organization.

DIT Step 1 Visit to Temple: Tues, Jan 12th at 12pm in 105
Hi everyone, DIT will be on campus one last time this Tuesday, Jan 12th at Noon to go over Step 1 strategies, tips, and their course. FREE lunch will be provided from Qdoba again as well as Dunkin Donuts and coffee throughout the morning. This session will be beneficial even for those who don't plan on taking a course but a big discount will be provided again since a lot of you have been asking.
Please attend if you can because $5 for every student who attends will be donated to Philabundance!
RSVP here so the correct amount of food may be ordered: http://goo.gl/forms/mOJcs3iPG0
3. Finally, as we settle into a strict diet of "STEP 1 review and whatever was taught in lecture today" with the more than occasional "holy crap, what is this" as we flip through First AID's biochemistry section, the reps and I want to remind everyone how important it is to take breaks from studying. Make sure you go for a run, play a video game, make music, just hang out with each other, or whatever it is that will bring down your stress over the next few months.
Please also remember that you are always welcome to speak with the reps, deans, Dianne, Dr. cosby, temple mental health staff, or myself if you ever feel you need to speak with someone.
4. just a llama wearing a sweet hat, scarf, and sunglasses.
Good luck tomorrow!

STEP 1 Information Week - 9/24-10/2
As we all know, STEP 1 is rapidly approaching. We have all heard from our older friends about various programs that we can use (or not to use) to help us prepare. In the past, the various companies have come randomly throughout first semester making it difficult to make informed decisions about their expensive products. This year, however, we will have most of the major companies come speak with us in a 2 week period (9/24-10/2) that will end with a panel of 3rd and 4th years. Below is the schedule for STEP 1 Information week.
St. Lukes - Jon and I worked it out so that you will have Doctors-In-Training come speak with you at your campus during lunch on Friday, Nov 13. We will also class capture all of the ones in MERB so you have access.
I am also working on getting Firecracker to come during this week.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Email and Discount for Micro and Biostat STEP 1 Prep Videos
Monday, August 17, 2015
Dear Class of 2018,
I wanted to introduce ourselves. We are Prashant and Jason. We were Temple medical students not too long ago. We noticed that during our second year, it was very difficult for us to find good review videos for Microbiology and Bio-Statistics. So we decided to come up with our own material. We have tested our videos with our classmates and also many other students throughout the country. We have updated our videos with all the reviews we have received and are finally ready to offer them to everyone.
Normally, we offer our Microbiology Videos for $20 for 3 months, and out Bio-Statistics Videos for $10 for 3 months. However, because we are Temple graduates, we wanted to share our videos to all of you for FREE. However, we do have costs to maintain our servers. For that reason, we are going to give you guys great discount. You can purchase 1 Year subscription for both Microbiology and Bio-Statistics for $10 and $5 respectively. We have temporarily decreased the price for your 1 year subscription. You will have until Friday August 21st at 8 PM to make this purchase. Please used the code "Temple" to get this discount. To get this offer, just add the 1 year subscription ($20 and $10) and then use the code "Temple" to get the discount. So for ONLY $15, you will have both Microbiology and Bio-Statistics videos for 1 year. Visitwww.usmlesimple.com to make the purchase.
We truly believe these videos will help you throughout your 2nd year and also during step 1 studying. Temple does a poor job teaching Microbiology and Bio-Statistics and our videos will address everything you need to know for the Step 1 Exam!
If you have any questions, please feel free to send us an email at [email protected].
Please share this with your other classmates and let them know that this offer expires this Friday.
Thank you,
Prashant and Jason
IMPORTANT STEP 1 PREP INFORMATION
Wednesday, August 12, 2015
1. Pathoma – sent me an email offering a similar discount to the one we had at the end of MS1; $85 for 12 months. If anyone is interested, please email me to let me know and I will get you the link.
2. Microbiology Review Videos/Prep – Relatively recent Temple Med graduates developed a microbiology and bio stats review course, similar to Pathoma. Please read his email below:
----Start Email----
“My name is Prashant and I just graduated from Temple this year. I am doing my residency in Radiation Oncology. My friend (Jason Sphislky- also a Temple med grad) and I have developed high yield videos for the Microbiology section of the USMLE step 1. These are designed very similar to Pathoma (if you have heard anything about this source, it is the best one out there for pathology/pathophysiology). We believe microbiology is often one of the most overlooked subjects for the step 1 exam and also during medical school.
We think that students will benefit the most if they use these videos along with their microbiology class. In addition, this will also help them with their regular classes. Since you guys are starting Microbiology block soon (if you haven't already), I wanted to share the product with you.
www.usmlesimple.com
We would like to offer this product free of charge to everyone at Temple since we are temple grads, but we have costs to maintain our servers, etc. Right now, our 3 month subscription is only $20. We have 4 free videos on our website that you can watch once you register for a free account. Please feel free to explore and see if you like our
Free videos. Please share it with your other classmates. Once you see our Free videos, you can always give us feedback, etc. If you can get around 50 students to sign up for it, we can give you guys 50% discount, soit will only be $10. We can also work for a different discount if there isn't a huge interest, but for $10, you won't find a better microbiology product. Since we are fairly new, you won't find any reviews online, just what our current users have written to us via email; we have included some comments on our website for others to see. That's why we offer 4 Free videos so that you don't waste your money if you don't like our videos. Plus, for you it's $10, which will help us maintain our costs and help you guys out too.
The other course we just released is Bio statistics. We felt that as med students at temple, we do not get many lectures on this topic. And so we decided to make this course as well. This course is offered for only $10 and with the discount, it will only be $5. Let me know if you have any other questions.”
-----End Email----
If you are interested in purchasing this resource please fill out this 1 question survey. This way I can respond to him with our classes’ level of interest.

3. I am working with U World to get a bulk discount on their Q-bank and self-evaluation tools. In order to receive a discount we need to select the same product that include 3m+ of service. I don’t know exactly the discount they will offer, as they require a number of students before theywill produce a quote. So if you plan to purchase the U-world Q bank and would like to try and get a discount please fill out this link.

QUESTIONS FOR MS3/MS4 ABOUT MS2 YEAR
Monday, August 10, 2015
Class of 2018!
Because of their schedule, it won't be possible to set up a panel with 3rd/4th years to discuss general questions about second year. Instead, some upperclassmen agreed to answer questions we submit to them. Please submit your questions about second year and I will pass it along and get you answers back within a week or so. Remember we will have a panel that focuses solely on STEP 1 prep, studying, etc in late September/early October.
