Anesthesia Interest Group
Event Title: Anesthesia and The Opioid Epidemic

The opioid epidemic is rapidly spreading through our national and local communities. There have been stories recently about the Kensington section of Philadelphia and how deeply affected this neighborhood is, which is just down the street from LKSOM. What does this have to do with Anesthesia? Many opiate addictions begin or are heightened via post-operative opioid prescriptions. Evidence shows that adequate pre-operative local anesthetic blocks can greatly reduce the need for pain medication post-operatively. This event will allow you to hear first-hand from a victim of the opioid epidemic, Nadia Panno, who was able to pick herself up from the depths of addiction to pursue a career as a nurse. Hear her stories of her medical struggles throughout her addiction and the pain medication restrictions she has been placed under to avoid opiates. Be inspired by a speaker telling you about the great challenges she has overcome to join the medical profession and how physicians saved her life on multiple occasions. Oh, Saffron lunch will also be provided to accompany this powerful story. Hope to see you all there!

ENT Interest Group
Event Title: Learn about ENT with Drs. Krouse and Jamal

The ENT Interest Group is hosting Dr. Krouse (chair of otolaryngology) and Dr. Jamal (director of the otolarygology residency program). They will be discussing the field of otolaryngology and its many subspecialties. Lunch will be provided.

Event Title: Movie Study Break with Chips and Dip

Join the OWLs for a quick study break and to celebrate National Chips Day (which was actually our snow day, but we already bought the chips and dip). We'll screen some Pixar Short films and relax for a bit before rounding out the block! 

3rd Annual Addictions Symposium
